Rainy Days...

Raining, clothes washing, drying, and time for a little sunshine. I scrapped what was suppose to be monochromatic, but I forgot while doing it, and painted some blue gouache on the picture and page. This is in Stonington, CT, a few years back, when we were able to pick up our little one and carry her to the car after she washed her feet in the brisk Atlantic Ocean.

Scrapping by candlelight

Scrapping by candlelight. Here is a picture of the studio, a seat closest to the window for more light. I never caught anything on fire, but wished I had a fire burning to keep us warm. I'm sure, one day, all the photo's I took of the days without power will show up on the blog, trees down, snow in the tub for toilet water, spoiled lab dogs, etc...

And the power is on!

Ten days without power, and ten days of scrapping by flashlights and candlelight. And now, we are blessed to have power, phone and internet back. You just don't realize how much you use things until they are gone. Here are some of the layouts I did by candle light. It was fun, but by day 7 I was frustrated, reaching for something that ran on electricity. But it taught me to use what I had and to keep it simple. Oh and paint, glimmer mist, etc...takes longer to dry a 45 degree cold room! The things I learned...

I'm so excited, I get to take a mixed media class at Inspiration Station, in CT this coming weekend. I can't wait, it will be so much fun.

So they are predicting a wintry mix tonight, brrr...and it's still October. Good night to do some scrapping and card making. Here's a picture of me and my youngest years back, celebrating Mother's Day. I love when kids pick flowers for me, it's so sweet and loving. Keep warm.

I love when our girls get together, and just laugh and smile. Although there is an age gap, they bring out the brightest smiles when they are together. I used some left over Gesso from another project to cover up an error and ended up painting the entire 12 x 12 sheet. But I like to look at this picture, because I remember taking it, and recalling the smiles.

SNOW IS MELTING

Ah, what a glorious sunrise in our backyard. The turkeys attempting to peck around for food. And the snow is indeed melting away. So far, no flooding in our area or basement. What a blessing indeed.

This is a close up of a project I'm working on. That's my mom and her mother, in the early 1950's. Playing with a lot of new Tim Holtz items, fun fun times.

And one batch of ATC cards down, and one to go for a swap. Don't look, if you joined the swap, tee hee! Have crossed off a lot on my list of things to do, and enjoying walking the dogs outside, finally.

EMBRACE IMPERFECTIONS

Over at Big Picture Classes , Karen Grunberg teaches Embrace Imperfections Workshop. What a wonderful two weeks to learn about what you are thinking during your creative time, and what you can do to embrace your imperfections. Afterwards, the assignment was to make a book, with quotes. I used DCWV Vintage Collage Stack for paper, and added embellishments and kept it simple.
The paper speaks for itself. I'm thinking about taking another class there...so much to learn and it's on line. Works for me!

Embrace your imperfections and allow them to flow creatively through your life.

We have a turtle, named Queso. He's simply an incredible, interesting and quirky reptile. Never gave a thought to a turtle and its personality until this silly fellow arrived in our life. Here's a simple layout that expresses it all.

ONE MORE LAYOUT OF SNOW

Still trying to finish up January snow storm photo's. Good grief, we had cabin fever bad. Is there such a thing as too many pictures of snow?

This is the year our youngest learns how to use the snow blower. She had more fun blowing the snow on me, while taking pictures of her, than clearing our driveway! I did a mix of swirls and photo frames to make the feminine and masculine blend a bit.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Here's a fun tag. Pulled out the water colors and enjoyed a bit of painting on the stamp. I love this skein of ribbon I bought at the knitting store. My friend, Hannah works there and pointed it out to me. PURPLE = Purchase in my life. I only wish I could knit better, but until then, I am finding ample ways to enjoy this vast wealth of colors.

Below is the flower at the top of the tag. So wild and free. And purple! One white rosette bud (not colored) from the Tim Holtz ribbon.

One more for the challenge. My favorite type of mixed media, dirtied hands art! Nah, that's just what I call it. Another fun stamp by Sandra Evertson, what a talented artist! She created the stamp above also.

FROZEN RIVER

What exactly does "it feels like -2 degrees" mean? Really cold, colder than cold. The Connecticut River defines it for me. It's a rustic river flowing right now. My husband took several pictures and I did a simple layout, using Kraft paper for the 12 x 12.

SNOW DAY AGAIN

I can't complain. It's a pretty snow day. White powder fell all morning. It's over, a few melted inches. The birds are signing, sun peeping through the clouds, not a bad day at all.

Working on all the snow pictures of 2011. Here's one of my daughter, after we shoveled snow off the roof. It was a perfect jump from the roof to the ground, that was covered with 5 feet of cushioned snow. She's always loved to jump, and in snow is no exception.

WOW! I love the Prima flowers, and as a bonus, check out the background they come on. Free clear printed words! Just so much fun to play with. I put a cut out of "Two Sisters" by Renoir on top of the words, with Bohemian scrapbook background paper, added vintage lace and a patched up flower.

I've been playing with some mix media simply collages. Allowing myself to use different media. This one, (sorry if the baby scares you) I used some oil pastels to work around the layout. I haven't touched my oil pastels for some time. Had to pull them from underneath the water colors...yet another media to dust off!

71 inches! Record breaking snow fall this year in Connecticut. It's snowing right now, but only a soft powder and lightly, very lightly. Here's a picture of what is left of my angel bird feeder, and to the right, my bird bath is under snow.

Joined a few scrapping sistah's on Skype last night; Lisa, Melissa and Susan. Made two cards, while chatting away. Nice visit with the girls. I make cards for the person in mind. Thus the, um, unique look of each!

SNOW DAY

It's almost time, according to the weather folks, for up to 10 inches of snow to commence. These pictures were taken four days ago, after the last blast of snow. This is a close up of a 6 foot icicle! Mighty big and you hear them kaboom every so often, when the sun warms up in the big state of Connecticut.

This is one of Connecticut's tobacco barns, down the road, all covered in snow. They are the prettiest barns I've seen, distressed, rusty, all the down and dirty goodness that I love so in nature and art.

My snow garden, full of plants longing to bloom this May. My chair, wonder if I'll see the top of it after this storm. It was actually that dark and dreary outside, when I took this almost white out conditions, picture.

My New Year's resolution, to make all the family cards for the year. And so far, so good. I'm up to February. With the snow storm about to arrive, I'll have more time to finish them. Nothing like a good Nor'eastern to keep you in your studio. I used Stampin Up stamps, Glimmer Mist and some pretty beads and flowers for these. A bit of distress and they are ready to be mailed! YEA!

DILAPIDATED BUILDINGS

I need a new bumper stickers on my van. I brake for tag sales, curb diving, gardens, churches, steeples, dilapidated buildings, scrapbook stores, etc... I'm sure my wonderful husband can name a few more things I've asked him to stop at.

This old building is so beautiful, cracked, crippled, peeling, such beautiful vintage colors to watch as the season's change in New England.

Doors! Old hardware, colors, adjustments, love them all. I'd love to open that door and visit inside, but afraid the entire place would cave in. But what colors, peeled paint, vintage styles I would find in there. Inspiration for me.

Steps leading up to who knows where.

Steeples, rises, did I mention how awestruck they are. Look at the colors, what an art palette!

I took 79 pictures around this worn down facility. My youngest daughter sat in the car and actually counted and laughed while I was doing my thing. She's the best, she know's her Mama well!

Here my youngest daughter is wearing an apron with a print from "The State Collection." Lori Matney Young is the talented artist. How do I know her? I went to school with her. We sat in art class together, year after year, in high school. Just a few years back, ha! Her art work has been feature nationally in Southern living Magazine and Romantic Homes Magazine.

Still ticking...

New Year's resolution, nah...just my own...to post on my blog again, and to a few boards. I've been creating, but not posting. For shame, I know. But am correcting that matter, now that I am no longer homeschooling...

Here is just one teeny tiny portion of the studio, the entire 8 foot desk top is covered just like this, looks like an assembly line. These are not the finished product. As a true lefty, I work from right to left, so a lot of the supplies are on my left side, out of sight from the pictures. These are some fun tags for family members, unique qualities for each of them.

This is the naughty pile. Naughty for me not to have them wrapped and ready for mail outs. Oh well, it's always fun to get home made gifts after Christmas.

Ancestory.com and K&Company made these papers! Both my girls were with me at the lss and the oldest, who also researches genealogy, we just stared, blinked, gulped and grabbed them all.

This is the family record...I've already used it in a few layouts, just cutting items out, but also planned to use it simply for genealogy.

This is so cool, all you need is the research data. I've torn into other mixed media projects, also.

And the pedigree chart ...all my research, on one page, or rip, tear, cut, or use it as it is...isn't is so exciting...yes, I have a paper fetish, and I know I am not the only one...

and the family story, this is so versatile, I've used vellum and adhered it over the lines, cut out the frame, the words, etc...

What does a child do when they are sick? Mine coughed and sneezed, ran a fever and rested in bed, along with her goodies. She did some knitting, crochet and made bracelets. These are colorful friendship bracelets that she can pass on to all her friends.

On the left, she learned how to make these beautiful beaded bracelets. On the right, her friend Shiloh (who taught her how to bead) made this necklace from beads and I bought it! I could not resist. You should see the red one!

Winter recess is over, I'm the last one to catch that nasty cold! Finally healed! It's time to play again. I'm posting a private swap layout. This weeks theme is for Paula. Three favorite characters from books. Now this was a hard thought process for me. I read and I have so many characters, but I went for what popped in my head.

CJ Layouts for Scrapping Sisters Swap

Here's the first layout on the CJ from a group of scrapping sisters swap. This is for Kathi's theme. Four things you take on vacation. Hats, maps, family and CAMERA.

I lived in the sun growing up, at the beach and outdoors, so now it's hat time and sunscreen. Maps, we have enough maps to wall paper a mansion. And yes, we have a GPS. Family. I need to remember family, and remind them to... well, if you travel with family, you understand what I mean. Camera. I promise you, it's the last thing out the door. I fret over it and all the chargers to everything...camera, cell phones, iPod adaptor, laptop...you get it. The camera. Last week, I told my daughter, grab the camera. "Ok," she says while I take the dogs out. We reach her horse show. "Where's the camera, baby?" "Oh, sorry." That's why it's the last thing out the door, swinging on my shoulder.

This second page layout is truly how my brain thinks for a week ahead of the trip. And poor Bill, he deals well with this "fret" issue. (He likes to take pictures also. I think we need to get another camera, but honestly, I would use them both!)

Now I am off to scrap the CJ layout due for next week. Kathi, hope you get a laugh out of mine! Stay warm in that Texas snow while I suffer a snowless Connecticut winter.

And for my gift this year to Lincoln, I produced a layout of Bill in Washington DC, hanging out with Lincoln. Acutally, you stand by Lincoln and see how tall he was. And tall he was.

And this wonderful collage of Lincoln was made by our oldest daughter, Blair. In our family, it's quite easy to give a present to Bill/Daddy. Just have something about Lincoln in it and you win!

GOTHIC ARCH CHALLENGE theme is crackle. I went to the library last Friday and saw the PBS.org bookmarks for Jane Austen movies. I grabbed, ahum, a few, and the movies are scheduled to record. Here's Emma, a match making gal...who means well!

My husband and younger daughter returned from Texas, visiting family and our older daughter, while I stayed here taking care of business. Now ya'll, I confess, I am a practical gal. I love thrift stores, garage sales, junking. Don't get me wrong, I love beautiful clothes, but learned that I destroy clothes because I don't change them to garden, do art, cook, play with the kids. And jewelry, oh my! I've destroyed so many beautiful pieces of jewelry because I didn't remove it. For our tenth anniversary, my husband asked if I wanted a diamond anniversary band. No, I wanted and received a tractor! (He did sneak a diamond ring in at Christmas time a few years ago...tears oh tears.) That boy knows what I like. The girls picked out some beautiful rings at an antique store and this is what Bill bought for me. Old books, new inherited relatives, lace/linen, old family pictures, letters, articles. I won the lottery!

Look at these gals in the lower left hand corner. They are from my mother in law's family.

Oh, some dear soul worked really hard, making this tiny yellow purse. This is one of those "how could you part with that" question I often have in my head.

"The Day"

A priceless memory, 1994, adopting my puppy, Sedona Ann.

I fell in love with her at the feed store. My stepmother, Kat, was with me. She fell in love with her also.

We left, went and told my dad.

We all drove back and they bought her for me.

Grand total? $25.00

What do I remember that day?

I fell in love.

Sedona played and fell asleep on my dad's lap.

I kept thinking...this is my puppy over and over.

She was such a wonderful dog.

She crossed the bridge to heaven in 2007, at 12.5 years of age.

I still miss her.

LET'S GET SHABBY CHALLENGE -Great theme...not just Valentine's Day, but scrap a layout with a note/letter that you received. Bailey Ann plays in the studio and always makes me the sweetest things. From necklaces to pictures to love notes. Here is a Valentine's note she wrote me a few years ago. I framed it with pictures of her that just take my breath away. She's grown up so fast and now 12! And our other daughter Blair, is 25! Oh I need to scrap faster to get caught up with the years.

Up close of the Valentine's letter to me. I love the imagination and simplicity of it all. Most of all, I love that she rolled it up, tied a ribbon around it, and hand delivered it to me, with that smile of hers. I am blessed to have such wonderful girls.

SCRAPPING THE MUSIC

The song this week is "Give Me Your Eyes."

Here is a layout of Bill and his father, Ted.

Ted went to heaven several years ago.

He spent his life as a Reverend of the Epsicopal Church, serving the Lord.

Two lines that stood out in the song

"...give me your eyes for just one second...to see the way you see the people all along...

Ted's eyes saw so much. Bill, his eyes see also.

Father, son...two wonderful men with blessed eyes.

TEXTURE TECHNIQUE TIME

Several people e-mailed me regarding a technique on an ATC. It's an embossing technique. {Mine is actually distressed embossing.} You need an emboss pad, {sold by ink stamp pads} cardstock, stamp/s, distress powder, ink applique.

Touch stamp to emboss pad and stamp to cardstock, repeat process over cardstock {to cover the entire background}

Apply distress powder, I used several colors. Shake it around, then off the cardstock to the paper. Afterwards, pour the mixture of powder from paper into a container for potpourri powder that you can use later.

Looks like this. Don't touch it!

Use your heat tool and dry it, keep the tool about 6 inches away. You will see the color and texture change. Let it cool to touch. Then gently rub off release crystals, the ones that come off, and there will be a distressed look. {I used distress powder for this project.}

I wanted a background color, so I took an applique, inked it in distress ink, and applied gently to areas. On this project, I applied several ink colors.

You did it! And off you go to create with your handmade background.

I hope this explains the process you e-mailed me about. There are many styles, with different powders/crystals. You can even use black paper and emboss with white powder for a fun look. Be a kid, play around with your supplies and create.

There's a great group of gals I met online at the Memory Maker Magazine Board. The magazine shut down, but on and off a group has remained in contact. We now scrap and blog! And even better, working on another Scrapping Sister Circle Journal. Lisa is hosting this one. (See all the Scrapping Sisters on the side bar.) We pick themes and mine is four things you would hang on your house sign. Well these gals were questioning what that meant. Defined for you sisters; write/scrap four that's 4 things you would want people to know when they enter your home. Here's mine, if that helps? Oh and, my layout to match this is coming...the wonderful expensive printer is printing interesting color hues on the photos.

TEXTURE TECHNIQUE TIME

Want to create some fun texture? This time, I am using Delta Texture Magic, cashmere color. You need a tool to spread it. Also, Glimmer Mist- Cocoa, Pearlescent Liquid Acrylic-Waterfall Green.

Apply texture to tool, and spread thin layers to desired texture. I used thin "icing" strokes. Clean tool off afterwards, the texture dries quickly. Note, the thicker you apply, longer it takes to dry

Here is what it looks like after application

I sprayed Glimmer Mist all over it

Apply liquid acrylic, with tool, toothbrush, paintbrush, etc...

I used a heat gun, about 6 inches away to dry. You can also let it sit dry. I also turn the paper over and dry the back side, helps the process along! Remember if you apply a lot of texture, it will take longer to dry. Here is how it looks dry.

And now create your masterpiece.

STEFF'S STUFF ATC Challenge is numbers. Here's my take, "Time for Love." I pulled out Delta Texture magic, swirled it around on cardboard, sprayed Glimmer Mist, then drops of liquid acrylic and turned the heat tool on. Sewed some hemp around it, added a charm, and voila, I have an ATC card for my dear gal pal, Laurie and her hubby.

GOTHIC ARCH CHALLENGE SUNDAY theme this week is Shabby Chic. One of my favorites. I named this project, "Out of the Goth." Why? It's late Sunday night, and I inked, stamped the picture, paper, distressed, found flowers, lace and then... pulled out this old photo frame and placed my unfinished piece in there. From then I continued working and realized, uh oh, I'm out of the Gothic arch. Such are the creations of a tired artist.

This is a picture of my mother in law, a few years ago = ) She's not only a beautiful child in the picture but a beautiful lady.

SCRAP THAT POETRY-ROBERT FROST

Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening, by Robert Frost. That's the poem to scrap this week at SCRAP THAT POETRY . Mine is called "Book Report', because my daughter geared up to go in our back yard and explore the fox and her pups. No snow that day but read the last verse of the poem:

The woods are lovely, dark and deep

But I have promises to keep

And miles to go before I sleep

Light bulbs went off the minute I read that verse. My daughter is wearing her robe, deep in our backyard woods. We homeschool, and her book report really was about foxes, thus my warp sense of humor. We never saw the fox after that day.

VINTAGE POSTCARD FREEBIES

In celebration of my father's birthday, I uploaded some vintage birthday postcards postmarked from 1901-1904. Mail cards were popular during the Golden Age and cost one cent to post. The United States Postal Service issued the first postcard on May 13, 1897. This Golden Age boom of the postcard lasted until about 1920 when the telephone took off. I love reading the backs of postcards. One I read, the lady told her brother he could bring his cow to her house next time he visited. Love reading the real lifestyle of the era!

I thank the good Lord for blessing me with such a wonderful father, who has always been there for me. I love you Dad. Happy Birthday.

COLOR SELECTIONS

I don't work at Lowe's. I am however a frequent visitor to the store, maybe to frequent. (Fixer upper house.) I am proud to say that I took paint chip samples from the day I saw them (years and I mean years ago.) In fact, my husband accepts the fact that when he ventures to Lowe's, he makes a stop at the paint chip section. I'm afraid the red light might go off if I enter to many times and security comes running after me with the paint stir sticks. Which I've taken quite of few of, also! Talk about altered art ideas.

On to the post. My free Lowe's Creative Ideas came in today. Look at the colors on the cover. My pulse increases, rapid breathing occurs until...
I reach this page. I am in color heaven. Wow, what a page of beauties. No matter if you used these mixes before they refresh you, energize you to venture forth in your color journey.

I just had to share this with all the paint chip and material swatch addicts in the world. Yes, material swatches...

MIXED MEDIA MONDAY--SEASIDE POSTCARD

MIXED MEDIA MONDAY CHALLENGE was something new. I pulled out my gouache paints dreaming of painting a seaside collage piece and ended up with something else. Welcome to art. But I did play with the paints, without water, on the cardboard. I usually choose other paints or gesso with my mixed media, so it was fun to use gouache.

I enjoyed creating the beach scene, since it's 20 degrees outside. I know, that's warm to some of you! Joy to all.

Over at Steff's Stuff is a fun ATC challenge using jewels. Here's my take on it. BINGO. Did you know I actually won $20 playing Bingo. I kept tugging at my husband's sleeve, asking in a shaky whisper, "Is this Bingo?" and he's yelling, "Yes, call out Bingo." And I kept pulling on his sleeve, in disbelief. I finally called out Bingo. It was so much fun.

Good news for him, in Connecticut, the beaches, not to mention the Atlantic ocean are a bitty chilly! WHERE MESSY WOMAN CREATES

Jo Packham's magazine, Where Women Create is a great magazine. I love to study every detail, sighing longingly at the beauty of the creative studios. My husband built me a wonderful studio, homeschooling/office and painting station for him. I've taken over 70% of the room. We will not talk about the barn or garage that contains items that I can't fit in the room. If Jo ever decides to publish one issue on "stuff it where you can room", I hope she calls me. I promise to sweep the floors. My fingers are crossed.

I'm showing these photos because I bragged about cleaning up and look what happened in a matter of days. And this is a good day. The left side was my daughters homeschool station, now it's mine {insert evil laugh.} Everything from the ceiling down is supplies, organized. No my fingers are not crossed.

The green and clear containers, ahum...I throw items that I don't use or use partial (that's why they call it scraps right?) in them. I pay my daughter to put them back in the organized areas. She gets an extra horse back riding lesson for the week. Funny now that I think of it, she keeps telling me to do more art...

And it continues... The rest of the room is for my loving husband and girls to use. (And two large goofy labs.) It is fun for all of us to be in the room, creating, laughing, good old fashion family time. I truly am blessed to have a husband support my art in all ways. And two girls that love to create as well. Hope you enjoyed the tour, I'm off to make a mess, get my hands inked up and be happy as a clam at high tide.

INHERITED FAMILY

You would think growing up in a large Italian family, I wouldn't need any more relatives! Wrong! I fell in love with garage/tag sales when I was young. The entire street brought items over every summer to our garage and I was hooked. In the 1980's, I started "junking" at garage/tag sales. I think I paid about 10 cents for a bunch of pictures. These pictures below were pulled from a great grandmother's trunk. Voila, I inherited family members. I enter day dream mode, wondering who these people are and why family members sold them off. And yet another reason I scrap and work in mixed media art. To save my family memories. I tell the kids, do not, under any circumstance, trash my work or sell it at a garage/tag sale. Raise these kids right, I say!

Growing up in the South, we say "garage sale." Living in New England, it's called "tag sale." Regardless, like the bumper sticker says, "I Brake For Garage Sales."

This is the Old North Church in Boston, MA...yes, history lovers, the famous Paul Revere "One if by land, two if by sea" and I love walking the Freedom Trail. I love Boston. Talk about a town that was built around hope.

One of my 2010 goals is to learn how to put blog links here, and click to the blog. I have two girls that keep me computer savvy, but somethings, I have to learn on my own, like this issue.

Here's my tag. Auld Lang Syne. My hopeless romantic theme...glistening chandelier, music dancing in the air, tick tock, the clock counts down to that special moment of greeting the New Year, ahh.. that first kiss of the New Year.

Lisa, my friend in Oklahoma, (who has seen a blizzard and more snow than one wants to see on the Texahoma line this month) loves this chandelier stamp by Impress as much as I do. We do enable each other, along with Paula and Courtney, when it comes to art supplies. It's a good thing they are not Santa, we'd never see any presents, they'd be busy in the studio, creating, telling the elves, "one more minute, just hold on..."
